Honours and Advanced Placement

Please note that entry into Honours and Advanced Placement is a competitive process - some students may achieve the minimum standard but may not be accepted into the course due to space limitations.

SCIENCE
Students wishing to take Science Honours courses must have at least 80% in the prerequisite course. To continue in the Honours pathway, students must maintain an 80% average. Advanced Placement courses have limited enrolment and first priority will be given to students who have completed the Grade 11 Honours courses with an 80% average of higher. Students who have not taken Honours 11 classes will be considered for Advanced Placement on a space-availability basis. In such cases, students will be selected based on grades, work habits, and teacher recommendations.

MATHEMATICS
Students currently in Math Honours courses must maintain at least an 80% average or have teacher approval to stay in the Honours pathway. Students who wish to transfer into Honours from Pre-Calculus courses need to have an 86% or above average in their course and/or teacher recommendation. Students in Honours classes with 86% or higher will be given priority over students from non-Honours classes.

ENGLISH
For admission into English Honours and AP courses, students should have at least an 80% average and a demonstrated interest, ability, and willingness to be readers and writers.

SOCIAL STUDIES
For admission into Social Studies Honours and AP courses, students are required to have an 80% average and teacher recommendation. These students will also have an interest in current affairs and world issues, and should have demonstrated strong literacy skills, and a good work ethic.

VISUAL ART
Admission into all Art Honours courses, beginning in Grade 10, will be based on teacher recommendation, 86% in Grade 9 Art (only in the area student is taking the Honours class), and submission of a portfolio for adjudication. Students must maintain 86% to stay in the Honours/AP Art classes for the following year.

MODERN LANGUAGES
Students who receive 86% or higher in French 8 and receive the endorsement of their teacher are recommended to take French 9 Honours. Students who are successful in French 9 Honours are recommended for French 10 Honours, and may continue in the AP French with teacher recommendation. Students who receive 86% or higher in Mandarin 11 or receive teacher recommendation may take AP Chinese Language and Culture 12.

TECHNOLOGY
For admission into AP Computer Science 12, students need 80% in ICT Computer Programming 11, or teacher recommendation.

BUSINESS EDUCATION
For admission into AP Microeconomics or AP Macroeconomics, students need 80% in Math and 80% in Social Studies courses, or teacher recommendation.

Note: If courses are full (after course selection), qualifying Honours/AP students will be placed on a wait list. If a space becomes available, students from the waitlist will be placed in the Honours class according to their ranking on the waitlist.
