Who Are We?The Provincial School for the Deaf consists of:
The B.C. School for the Deaf is administered by the Burnaby School Board, and operates from two locations: South Slope Elementary School and Burnaby South Secondary School. These facilities feature the latest in modern technology and design, and are fully accessible to the deaf. Students are given the opportunity to take part in academic, social and recreational activites with their deaf peers and with hearing students as appropriate.Classroom "pods" in the elementary school and a central "Deaf Core" in the secondary school help to preserve the identity of the provincial school. Deaf students may take classes in BCSD classrooms staffed by teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, participate in shared learning experiences with both deaf and hearing students, or participate fully with appropriate support in other courses offered throughout the schools. At each school, students elect leaders to their own BCSD Student Council, and deaf representatives are also members of the student government. Deaf students can participate in a variety of school clubs, and teams of deaf students can compete in intramural sports and competitions. Students also participate in out-of-school activities, both in teams and as individuals in events sponsored by the British Columbia Cultural society for the Deaf, the British Columbia Deaf Sports Federation and the Canadian Deaf Sports Federation. Close contact with other deaf students is maintained through interschool visits, deaf leadership conferences, special events such as performances by Deaf actors, and competitions like the Youth Canada Tournament of the Deaf. |
