The British Columbia Provincial Oral Program

The British Columbia Provincial Oral Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students is administered by the Burnaby School District. It has been an integral part of Burnaby South Secondary School since 1980.

This provincial resource program is funded by the British Columbia Ministry of Education and serves eligible secondary-aged deaf and hard of hearing students from throughout the province who prefer auditory/oral communication.

The Provincial Oral Program for Deaf and Head of Hearing Students is committed to providing an environment which promotes clear and effective communication among secondary-aged deaf and hard of hearing students whose preferred mode of communication is auditory/oral. Students are encouraged to make maximum use fo their residual hearing and receive speech and speech reading support according to the auditory/oral philosophy.

To attend the Provincial Oral Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, a student must have a moderate to profound hearing loss. Potential candidates are reviewed by the Provincial Educational Review Committee for Deaf Students (PERCD). This Ministry of Education committee consists of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals which determines eligibility for provincial resource programs for deaf and hard of hearing students based on the educational needs of the individual. Referral to the committee is made by the student's home school district. Once a student is considered eligible, the school district can make application for admission to the Provincial Oral Program at Burnaby South Secondary School.
